Clay

I remember reading that the average American has three professions in his/her lifetime. That makes me average. The first third of my life was spent as a student and lab technician. In my thirties I became a Registered Nurse. Now in my sixties, I am an artist.
My medium is clay. Raku pottery and raku tiles are my specialty. Raku, an ancient Japanese art form, combines chemistry, fire and smoke to produce dramatic displays of color.
In 1998 and 1999 I studied throwing with Regan Carney in Bay St. Louis, MS. From 1999 to 2004 I was mentored in the art of raku by Joe Bernard of Lacombe, LA.

I am a Charter member of The ARTS-Hancock county and a member of the Lacombe Art Guild. My work is currently being shown at Gallery 220, Twin Lights Creations, and People’s Bank in Bay St. Louis, MS. It is also at Brown’s Fine Art Gallery in Jackson, MS. I am active in the Arts Alive Studio Tour. I regularly participate in BridgeFest in Bay ST. Louis and Hot Art in a Cool Space art show in Lacombe, LA. In May of 2010 I was awarded Second Place in the 3-D division at Bridge Fest.
In April of 2011 I was awarded First Place in the membership show of the Lacombe Art Guild. I have commissioned pieces at both the Bay St. Louis and Waveland, MS. Libraries.
I am currently refining my glaze recipes. All of my glazes are prepared in my studio by weighing chemicals on a triple beam scale and combining them as one would for a food recipe. My personal preference tends towards the luster glazes with some use of matte glazes for contrast.

My theory is that pottery is a combination of physics (the throwing of the vessel), chemistry (the mixing of the various chemicals to for the glazes) and art (the final product). My goal is to use my energy to bring these three elements together with beauty. My hope is that other can appreciate the art work that has given me so much pleasure to create.
